Swimming with your head down…

It really pays to swim with our heads down. It’s very tough to raise the head with out sinking the hips when swimming freestyle. Tucking the head downward with each breaststroke also provides a shallow diving motion giving us more ease and speed.

While I do not want a swimmer aiming the head to the bottom of the pool to achieve balance, the problem more often than not is lifting the head while swimming.

Aim the head towards the wall when swimming. The sky and the bottom of the pool make for poor targets when swimming.

Enjoy the water today.

I’ve noticed that Grant Hackett does a little nod with his head after breathing, almost like a shallow butterfly motion; a few of my better swimmers do that as well (not sure if I do it or not); do you know what/why that is?

Jamie,

Our heads are pretty heavy and if we add that mass effectively to our momentum, it will help our results.

In the breaststroke for example, doing a shallow downward nod where my ears are in between my biceps after I inhale and do a shallow dive as I kick really helps me.

Once I have swimmers stop throwing their heads about needlessly, I do like them to gain a little back by using their head a little to aid them.
